About

Whether in negotiating an agreement, resolving a dispute, or strategizing a career pivot, Ellen Kim strives to invite impactful conversations through the art of a beautiful question. She is currently Corporate Counsel at Workday, where she serves as a strategic business advisor and deal negotiator to a robust Sales organization. In her role at Workday, she also leads sales enablement initiatives to train the Sales organization on how to effectively position legal conversations. She also leverages the same skills of active listening, creative solutioning, and attentive reframing in her work as a mediator to facilitate effective settlements. Additionally, Ellen enjoys coaching business leaders in Silicon Valley through Santa Clara University's Graduate Business School as a Career Design Coach. In particular, she is passionate about providing tailored, culturally attentive coaching to a new generation of diverse business leaders. Ellen also greatly enjoys experimenting with making new ice cream flavors, having non-sequitur conversations with her 3 young children, and eating aforementioned experimental ice cream (preferably outdoors on a sunny afternoon). She resonates with going from strength to strength in different seasons of life, and strives to do that in her current season. Ellen received her B.A. in Music and Political Science from University of California, Berkeley, and her J.D. from University of California, Hastings College of the Law.

Why AWCC?

As an attorney supporting a predominantly white male sales organization, I have been treated to a masterclass in the skills required to ascend in a corporate environment and more accurately, become very adept at immediately identifying those aspects of Asian culture which quickly cripple one's professional development. I've witnessed these trends on repeat with many Asian American professionals across industries and roles due to cultural values that "do not translate" into the American corporate environment. Moreover, I see this recurring pattern with the graduate business students (particularly the international students) I coach at Santa Clara University's Graduate Business School. Culturally attentive coaching to get past these internal roadblocks is key not only to professional fulfillment, but most importantly, to personal fulfillment. I am excited for the opportunity to join a group of Asian women coaches dedicated to culturally attentive coaching.
